André Labarrère

André Labarrère (born January 12, 1928 in Pau , † May 16, 2006 in Pau) was a French politician of the Parti socialiste .

Life

Labarrère studied history and literature in Paris. As a university professor he taught from 1959 to 1966 at Laval University in Québec . After his return from Canada he became politically active in the late 1960s and became a member of the Parti socialiste. Labarrère became a member of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department and entered the National Assembly in 1967 . From 1967 to 1968, from 1973 to 1981 and from 1986 to 2001 he was a member of the National Assembly. From September 23, 2001 to May 16, 2006, Labarrère was a member of the Senate of France . Between 1971 and 2006 he also held the post of mayor of Pau. He is considered to be the first gay politician living out in France. Labarrère died of cancer in 2006.
