The Basketball Champions League 2016/17 was the first season of the Basketball Champions League . The competition has no immediate predecessor and most closely follows on from the former FIBA Suproleague .
Iberostar Tenerife from Spain won the title .
Prehistory to the premiere season and significance
After FIBA Europe sought a joint competition with the Euroleague participants in the Euroleague Commercial Assets (ECA) according to the original plans, a tug-of-war and competition for competitors with the Eurocup began after their resistance , caused by threats of sanctions from the national associations initiated by FIBA escalated for clubs in the top national leagues.
According to the original plans, the premiere season should take place with 32 participating teams in the main round, for which a draw was held in July 2016. After the sanctions of national associations led to the withdrawal of various clubs from the EuroCup 2016/17 , FIBA changed the mode that had already been chosen and set up another, fifth main round group. In addition to the Eurocup dropouts AEK Athens , KK Partizan Belgrade , Stelmet Zielona Góra , the designated qualifiers Banco di Sardegna Sassari , Beşiktaş Sompo Japan , MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg , Proximus Spirou Charleroi and Szolnoki Olaj KK were given the right to start in the main round The number of qualifiers has been reduced to 20, who, in addition to 32 seeded teams, are fighting for eight other starting places for the qualifying winners.
Of the two FIBA European Cup competitions, the Basketball Champions League is clearly to be seen as having priority over the FIBA Europe Cup. In a pan-European comparison, however, the importance of competition is not clear. While various national champions from Southern and Eastern Europe as well as Germany are eligible to compete in the Euroleague, FIBA was ultimately able to win national champions from Belgium , Bosnia and Herzegovina , Bulgaria , France , Israel , the Netherlands , Portugal , Romania , Sweden , Slovakia , Slovenia , Czech Republic , Hungary , Ukraine , Belarus and Cyprus win for their competition. The naming does not seem completely unjustified because there are more national champions in the FIBA competition than play in the European competitions of the ECA, but the stronger teams are still suspected in their competitions.
The supremacy of the EuroLeague is undisputed. However, it is controversial which of the two competitions, EuroCup or Basketball Champions League, is the second most important in the 2016/17 season after the EuroLeague. Although many renowned teams from the most important European leagues as well as former long-time EuroLeague participants are represented in the EuroCup, not a single national champion takes part, while 16 champions are in the Champions League.
One factor that speaks for the Basketball Champions League and against the EuroCup is the variety of countries from which the participating clubs come. While clubs from only nine different nations take part in the EuroCup, there are 31 different nations in the Champions League. This in turn means a higher performance density in the EuroCup.
mode
After increasing the number of participants to 40 teams in five main round groups, the mode was almost completely revised again. 16 teams take part in the first qualifying round, and they determine eight participants in the second qualifying round in the knockout system . Four winners have a bye in the second round, while the other four winners meet four other qualifiers and four other winners of the second qualifying round are determined by adding the two legs. The total of eight winners of the second qualifying round will be divided into the first four main round groups.
In the main round there are six seeded teams per main round group with the exception of the fifth main round group, to which eight seeded teams belong. Including the eight qualifying winners, eight teams play per main round group, so that there are a total of 40 participants in the main round in five main round groups. In each of the main round groups, a round- robin tournament is played in which each team plays a return game against each other group participant. The results result in a ranking for each group, in which the first in the table are definitely qualified for a round of 16 play-offs from the first and second leg. In addition, the three best runners-up in the table are definitely qualified for the round of 16 in a group-wide ranking. The other two table runners-up, the table third and fourth and four of five table fifths, a total of 16 teams, reach a "pre-play-off" round in which the winners from the two legs take part in the round of 16 of the Champions League. Another eight teams, the worst fifth in the table, all sixth in the table and the two best seventh in the table, however, reach the round of 16 in the FIBA Europe Cup 2016/17 .
From the round of 16, four participants in the final four tournament will be determined in the knockout system in the two legs, which will be played on the weekend from April 28th to 30th. The losers of one of the semi-finals determine the third place in the competition in the small final, while the winners of the semi-finals play off the overall and title winners in a final.
Attendees
On the basis of a club ranking, the national champions of Bosnia and Herzegovina , the Netherlands , Portugal , Romania , Sweden , Slovakia and Belarus must first compete in the qualification, with the Bulgarian master Lukoil Akademik only joining the second qualifying round. Other participants are the vice-champions Bakken Bears from Denmark , Tartu Ülikool from Estonia and KK Mornar Bar from Montenegro as representatives for the non-participating national champions . The field of 20 qualifying participants will be filled by other teams from Bulgaria , Finland , Italy , Israel , Lithuania , Portugal, Romania and Turkey .
The eight winners of the qualification meet 32 seeded teams in the first group stage, including the national champions from Belgium , France , Israel , Slovenia , the Czech Republic , Hungary and the Ukraine as well as the runners-up from Croatia , Lithuania and Poland . In addition to Germany , for which the previous year's FIBA Europe Cup title winners Skyliners Frankfurt and EWE Baskets Oldenburg were set, to which the MHP Giants Ludwigsburg later joined, Greece , Italy and Turkey also send several seeded teams, although their best national teams are represented in competitions of the ECA. The French league LNB Pro A , which is not represented by any teams in the ECA competitions, has the largest number of seeded teams with four teams and from the Spanish league ACB and the supranational VTB United League , both of which are more ECA-related and special FIBA-critical, Iberostar Tenerife and Awtodor Saratow each come with a team. The Latvian and Serbian third parties BK Ventspils and Mega Leks are the only representatives of their countries.
qualification
The qualification was played back and forth and started with the first leg of the first round on September 27, followed by the second leg two days later. In the following week the first leg of the second round took place on October 4th and the qualification was then decided on October 6th with the second leg of the second round.
