AEK Larnaka BC ( Greek ΑΕΚ Λάρνακας ) is the basketball team of the Cypriot sports club AEK Larnaka from Larnaka .

history

The entire club, as well as the basketball team, was founded in 1994 through the merger of two teams from Larnaka.

The previous clubs

Pezoporikos Larnaka

The sports club Pezoporikos Larnaka ( Πεζοπορικός Λάρνακας ) was founded in 1927 and provided successful teams in the sports of soccer, volleyball and basketball. The basketball team won nine titles, including four Cypriot championships and five Cypriot cup wins. The most successful period for the club was in the early 1990s until the breakup in 1994 when Pezoporikos dominated Cypriot basketball and won the league three times during that time. The team was represented four times in the European Cup. In the European Cup of National Champions it failed in the 1991/92 season in the first round to Virtus Bologna , one season later it was again in the first round. This time they lost to PAOK Thessaloniki . In addition, the team started twice in the Korać Cup , where they also failed early.

successes

  • 4 × Cypriot champion (1973, 1991, 1992, 1994)
  • 5 × Cypriot cup winners

EPA Larnaca

EPA Larnaka ( ΕΠΑ, Ένωσις Πεζοπορικού ΑΜΟΛ Λάρνακας ) was founded in 1930 and provided teams in the same sports as Pezoporikos. While the soccer team became champions three times, the basketball team was far more unsuccessful and never won a title.

Merger to AEK Larnaka

In 1994 Pezoporikos and EPA merged to form the AEK Larnaka . By winning the title of Pezoporikos in the 1993/94 season, AEK took part in the national championship cup in the following season, where it failed in the second round at FC Barcelona . Mixed years in the national league followed. 1996 and 2002 followed two more participations in the Korac Cup, in which the team was eliminated again early. After falling into the second division, AEK rehabilitated itself and was already one of the favorites to win the title in 2012, but it was missed. In the 2012/13 season, the team then managed to win the championship. The final series against the ten-time champions APOEL Nicosia was won 3-1.
