Basketball Champions League 2016/17

The Basketball Champions League 2017/18 was the second season of the Basketball Champions League . AEK Athens from Greece won the title .

mode

The number of participants was reduced from 40 to 32 teams. In the first qualifying round, 16 teams took part, which determined eight participants in the second qualifying round in the knockout system in the first and second leg. There they met eight teams that were seeded there. The eight winners of the second qualifying round met again in the third qualifying round against eight intervening teams. The winners of this round qualified for the group stage.

In the main round, eight teams per main round group competed against each other in four groups in a round-robin tournament , in which each team played a return match against every other group participant. The results resulted in a ranking for each group, in which the four best per group qualified for a round of 16 play-offs from the first and second leg. The fifth and sixth in the table were moved to the round of 16 of the FIBA Europe Cup 2017/18 , the last two in each group were eliminated from the European Cup.

From the round of 16, four participants in the final four tournament were determined in the knockout system in the two legs, which was played on the weekend of May 4 to 6, 2018. The losers of one semi-final game determined the third place in the competition in the small final, while the winners of the semi-finals played off the overall winner and title winner in a final game.

Attendees

Including qualifying participants, 21 national champions took part in the Basketball Champions League, which means that 13 national champions took part more than in the two competitive competitions EuroLeague and EuroCup combined. Among the 21 national champions, the champions from France and Italy were also represented by those from quite relevant European leagues, and the runners-up from Germany, France and Turkey also preferred the Champions League. In terms of quality, the Champions League has therefore come closer to the EuroCup.

qualification

The qualification was played back and forth and started with the first leg of the first round on September 19, followed by the second leg two days later on September 21, 2017. In the following week, the first leg of the second round took place on September 24 and the second leg on September 26, 2017. Another week later, the first leg of the third qualifying round took place on September 29 and the qualification was then decided on October 2, 2017 with the second leg of the third round.

19 of the 24 eliminated qualifiers switched to the group stage of the FIBA Europe Cup 2017/18 .
