AGO Rethymnou (Greek: Αθλητικός Γυμναστικός Όμιλος Ρεθύμνου, German: Athletic Sports Club Rethymnou; short: ΑΓOΡ, AGOR) is a Greek basketball club based in Crete . The club plays in the first Greek league, the Basket League , and plays its home games in Rethymno . For reasons of sponsorship , the club has been running under the name Rethymno CRETAN KINGS since the 2015/16 season .

history

As a popular sports club, Athlitikos Gymnastikos Omilos Rethymnou, founded in 1965 by Ioannis Chalkidakis and Antonios Vitakis, AGOR has had a basketball department only since 1986. Until 1999 the club was only represented in the lower leagues and played no significant role in Greek basketball . In 1999, the club rose to the Gamma Ethniki ( Γ΄Εθνική ) - which corresponds to the fourth division - and always occupied a place in the top group in the following seasons, but missed the promotion every time. In 2003 the club signed Stergios Koufos as a new trainer and with this the sporting success came for the first time. With only two defeats in the season, AGOR managed the championship and promotion to the Bita Ethniki ( Β΄Εθνική ), which the following year also finished with first place and enabled the club to move up to the second highest Greek league ( A 2 ). While the promotion was only just missed in the first season, AGOR made a sensational leap into the Greek Cup final in 2007 . On the way to the final, AGOR prevailed against major players such as PAOK Thessaloniki and Panionios Athens , but lost to the highly favored record cup winner Panathinaikos Athens .

Although AGOR was only able to finish the 2006/2007 season as third in the table, the club rose to the highest Greek league ( A1 Ethniki ) because Sporting Athens decided not to participate for financial reasons.

After the regular season 2012/2013, which Rethymno finished in fifth place, they prevailed against PAOK Thessaloniki in the later course of the subsequent play-offs and reached the semi-finals of the Greek championship for the first time in the club's history.
