Medi Bayreuth (sometimes also spelled medi bayreuth for design reasons ) is a German basketball team that was founded in 1999 as the BBC Bayreuth. The game operations of the 1st men's team were removed from the BBC Bayreuth e. V. spun off into BBC Bayreuth Spielbetrieb GmbH and has been participating in the basketball league since the 2010/11 season .

history

Beginnings and development to the Bundesliga club

Before 1999 there were several clubs or teams that had no legal connection to the BBC Bayreuth , but were predecessors of the club or team.

Werner Pietschmann is considered a pioneer of basketball in the city of Bayreuth, who got to know the sport as a student in the United States and introduced it to gymnastics lessons at the German grammar school in the 1950s, as well as setting up a school team with a colleague against whom on January 29, 1955 BBC Coburg played the first mentioned basketball game in Bayreuth.

From the beginning of the 1970s, players with the surname Kämpf determined the events at Post SV Bayreuth. In the game year 1972/73 the Kämpf brothers Thomas, Hans, Karl and Georg belonged to the team. In addition, Wolfram Kämpf, to whom there was no family relationship. In the 1974/75 season Bayreuth qualified as third in the table of the Regionalliga Süd for a place in the 1975 newly founded 2nd Bundesliga South. The Post SV Bayreuth was thus in 1975 a founding member of the 2nd Basketball League and managed in the first season 1975/76 promotion to the National Basketball League .

In their first Bundesliga game year 1976/77, the team had to pay hardship. The team of coach Peter Müller lost the first 13 games before the first Bundesliga victory against SSC Göttingen with 88:73 in early December 1976. In the 1978/79 season, the Bayreuthers had not been relegated until the last day of the relegation round when the Franconian rival Bamberg was beaten. Manfred Voigt scored the decisive basket shortly before the end of the game. Bayreuth stayed in the Bundesliga, Bamberg had to go to the second division.

In the spring of 1979 the Post-SV Bayreuth had debts of around 80,000 DM, which resulted in particular from the expenses for the basketball Bundesliga team. The chairman of the association considered this situation to be unsustainable. Other Bayreuth clubs rejected the offer to buy Bundesliga game rights from Post SV, and they were threatened with withdrawing from the top German division. Ultimately, the basketball department separated from the club and was re-established as USC Bayreuth (University Sports Club Bayreuth). Eckhard Hentes, who had already worked as chairman and masseur for the Bundesliga team, became chairman of the USC. In the 82/83 season, Bayreuth, under coach Tom Schneeman, also caught the eye on a European level and made it to the finals in the Korac Cup . In 1983 the club was renamed USC Olympia Bayreuth due to sponsor ARITEX . After the 1983/1984 season, they were relegated from the basketball league.

The Steiner period

In the run-up to the second division season 1984/85, the team plagued economic difficulties. Carl Steiner (owner of the Steiner-Optik company ) and Horst Steiner (tax consultant) joined as patrons and initiated the merger with the table tennis Bundesliga club TTBG Steiner-Optik Bayreuth , founded by the Steiners in 1970, to form the new BG Steiner Bayreuth club . In the following years the association was mainly financed by the Steiner brothers, who also contributed as President (Horst) and Vice President (Carl). In 1984/85 they went straight back to the basketball league after one season and reached the final of the DBB Cup, which was lost to Göttingen, as a second division team.

In the following years, the Bayreuthers established themselves in the top flight of the Bundesliga: In the 1985/86 and 1987/88 seasons they were eliminated in the semifinals against Cologne. The team became German basketball cup winners in 1988, now only performing under Steiner Bayreuth , and German champions and cup winners in 1989. The main round in 1988/89 was finished with 40: 4 as the first in the table. Also in the game year 1989/90 Bayreuth had the best record of all Bundesliga clubs with 42: 2 points after the main round, but later lost to Leverkusen in the final. In the 1990/91 season was the semifinals against Leverkusen terminus. In terms of sport, the US coach Lester Habegger was the main responsible for the success. He was described as a “pioneer, father figure, architect and seal of approval”, but had to interrupt his work in Bayreuth several times due to back problems. Important players on the successful team were Calvin Oldham , Michael Koch , Alvin Dukes , Buzz Harnett and Anthony Reuss . In 1992 they were relegated from the basketball division again, but were able to return after a successful season in the second division.

Bankruptcy and a fresh start

In 1997 the long-time sponsor Steiner separated from the club and the name was changed to Basket Bayreuth . Manfred Schöttner , who had previously been a member of the Economic Council, took up the position of chairman. Due to financial problems (around 2.2 million D-Mark debts) the club also got into a sporting crisis. In 1999 they were relegated from the Bundesliga. The Basket Bayreuth association was broke. Before the start of the season, they withdrew from the 2nd basketball league to the regional league. The BBC Bayreuth club, newly founded in May 1999, took over gaming operations there, while the old Basket Bayreuth club was wound up and formally dissolved in October 2002. The first team was spun off in 2002 in the BBC Bayreuth Spielbetrieb GmbH. Under coach Georg Kämpf, the team won the championship title in the 1st Regionalliga Südost and the Bavarian State Cup in the 1999/2000 season .

Participation in the basketball league

On April 4, 2010, the BBC Bayreuth, under the direction of head coach Andreas Wagner, secured promotion to the 1st basketball league by winning the championship in the Pro A with a 97:53 win against Nördlingen in the fully occupied Upper Franconia Hall on April 10, 2010 and winning the DBB Cup on May 2, 2010 the double in the second-highest German division. The outstanding man of the championship year was the American Jaivon Harris , who was named Player of the Year in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA by the specialist portal eurobasket.com. In the first year in the Bundesliga after more than a decade of being in the lower class, relegation could be achieved.

On January 1, 2013, Marko Beens took over the position of managing director from Manfred Schöttner, but ended his engagement again in May 2013. He was followed by Martin Piotrowski in May 2015. On March 25, 2013, the Serbian Predrag Krunić became the new head coach of the BBC Bayreuth . Previously, the club had separated from the previous coach Marco van den Berg after a sporty downhill run. Krunić initially received a contract until the summer of 2013, which was extended to 2014 when relegated. On the penultimate day of the match, the BBC managed to stay in the league with an 86:71 away win against Central German BC. Since the 2013/14 season, the first team has been running under the name Medi Bayreuth , derived from the main sponsor Medi .

On December 29, 2013, Medi Bayreuth put his coach Predrag Krunić on leave due to the poor performance in the previous season. Until the time of the leave of absence, Bayreuth could only win three of 15 games. His successor was Michael Koch , who had been a basketball player for Steiner Bayreuth from 1987 to 1991. Under Koch, the team managed to stay up after a home win against TBB Trier .

For the 2014/15 season, Philipp Galewski, who was 27 years old at the time, was hired as a very young full-time manager who previously worked for the name sponsor medi . After finishing 16th (2014/15) and 12th place (2015/16), Galewski did not extend Michael Koch's contract . The Austrian Raoul Korner , who previously worked for the Basketball Löwen Braunschweig , was signed as his successor . Under Korner, the team was in fourth place at the end of the points round of the 2016/17 season and thus secured a playoff participation for the first time since 1996. In the quarterfinals Medi Bayreuth was eliminated after four games against EWE Baskets Oldenburg . Seven professional players from the successful season 2016/17 were held in Bayreuth for the following season 2017/18, in which they also took part in international matches in Group C of the Basketball Champions League . At the end of February 2018, Managing Director Galewski left office. In the summer of 2018, Björn Albrecht , who had previously worked at Brose Bamberg since January 2015, took up his position. In April 2019, the club announced the strengthening of the management level with the creation of a position of sporting director. Matthias Haufer was transferred to this office (from July 1, 2019). At the end of October 2019, Haufer resigned at his own request, as he felt that he “did not do justice to the common claim to the function and role of the sporting director”. From September 2019 to the end of the 2019/20 season, there was a collaboration with third division club BBC Coburg to give young players time to play with third division clubs , which, however, did not make sense from a sporting or logistical point of view from trainer Raoul Korner. On July 29, 2020, the Medi company announced that it would withdraw as the main and name sponsor of Medi Bayreuth at the end of the 2021/2022 season.

Hall

Medi Bayreuth plays its home games in the Oberfrankenhalle . The capacity of the hall is 3400 people.

In 2016 it became known that medi bayreuth was planning to build a new training hall on the Wilhelminenaue site in Bayreuth. The training hall should be used by the Bundesliga professionals, but above all by the youngsters. Currently (as of July 2020) the association is looking for a solution to finance the hall.

Fan club

Bayreuth Bats is a sponsor and fan club of the BBC Bayreuth. Due to Bayreuth's rich history of basketball, the fan club has dedicated itself to promoting basketball. In addition to direct fan work, the fans repeatedly support the professional team and popular sport financially.

During the 2018/2019 season, the founding of a second fan club under the name Bayreuth X became known, which initially mainly attracted attention to away trips. The first public appearance took place during the away game at Science City Jena on March 16, 2019. For the 2019/2020 season, Bayreuth X will also be represented at medi bayreuth's home games.
