W. Stephen McMahon is an American basketball coach and former player.

Life

McMahon played basketball at Bishop Brady High School, New Hampshire, and Merrimack College, Massachusetts . His best score of 52 in one game (achieved during the 1971/72 season) meant first place in this category in the all-time list of the university team. In 1985 he was inducted into the Merrimack College Hall of Fame. In 1972, he graduated with a degree in accounting . In the same year, the two-meter-tall winger was selected in the NBA draft process  in 134th place by the Cincinnati Royals . In early September 1972 McMahon was signed by the Kansas City Kings , but at the end of the month he was removed from the squad and the contractual relationship dissolved. Also in 1972, the Pittsburgh Condors secured the rights to McMahon in the ABA draft . He moved to the US EBA league and strengthened the Hartford Capitols there from 1972 to 1974. At the same time as his activity as a player in the EBA, he began his coaching career in 1973 at Bishop Guertin High School. From 1975 to 1979 he was the assistant coach of the basketball team at St. Anselm College in New Hampshire.

1979 McMahon was hired as coach of the German Bundesliga club USC Bayreuth . He stayed in office until 1981. He looked after the team (partly as a player-coach) in the European Cup. During his first year in Bayreuth, he helped out in a game in the 1979/80 season as a player and scored 36 points. Still, the game was lost. Angry about the defeat, McMahon slammed the door to the shower room, pinching the middle finger of his left hand in the process. The fingertip that was severed in the process could not be sewn back in the hospital.

McMahon returned to the United States in 1981 and worked in finance. He later coached the girls' basketball team at Londonderry High School for five years.
