Dan Palmer (basketball coach)

Dan Palmer (born 1950 ) is an American - British basketball coach . Among other things, he worked for several clubs in the German basketball league .

career

The Detroit native  Palmer looked after the English first division club Crystal Palace and led the team in 1982 to win the national championship. In the 1982/83 season he caused a sensation with Crystal Palace in the European Cup, when Palmer's team threw the German representative Saturn Cologne out of the competition, won the first leg against Real Madrid in the next round , but then lost the second leg and was eliminated. He then worked as a coach in Portsmouth.

In November 1986 he was hired by Bundesliga club FC Bamberg as head coach. He stayed in Bamberg until the end of the 86/87 season, no agreement was reached between Palmer and the club on a contract extension.

In October 1990 Steiner Bayreuth brought him as head coach after he had separated from Bundesliga rivals SSV Ulm four weeks earlier. At the beginning of his tenure in Bayreuth, Palmer led the team in 20 games to 16 wins, at the end of the main round the Bayreuthers were in second place in the Bundesliga southern season.

In the 1992/93 season Palmer was the coach of the Bundesliga club BG Stuttgart / Ludwigsburg , but was replaced in this position by his assistant Charles Brigham during the course of the game . For the 1993/94 season, Palmer moved to Post-SV Telekom Bonn (predecessor club of Telekom Baskets Bonn ) in the 2nd basketball league and brought Eric Taylor from Ludwigsburg to the Rhineland, who was one of the defining players in Bonn in the following years.

In 1994 Palmer returned to England and took up the position of head coach at the Hemel Royals. In the 1996/97 season, Palmer was a coach for the Portuguese first division club Estrelas in Lisbon .

In January 1998, Palmer was taken on as a coach by ailing Bundesliga club Ruhr Devils . A month later, the team was deregistered from the game after the bankruptcy. In the 2001/02 season he coached TuS Jena in its first year after promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga and led the team as twelfth in the table to keep the league.
