Harnett played at Serra High School in the US state of California and from 1974 to 1978 at the University of San Diego in the NCAA . His 1090 points scored during this time meant sixth place in the eternal basketball list of the university team with the nickname "Toreros" when he left them in 1978. He also had a total of 723 rebounds. That was the third-best number ever in the team's history at the time.

After the end of his college career, which secured Golden State Warriors in the NBA draft  rights to Harnett 1978th In the same year he went to Germany and played in the 1978/79 season for SSV Hagen in the basketball league. In 1979 he moved to the Bundesliga competitor USC Bayreuth (1984 in BG Steiner-Optik Bayreuth, renamed in 1985 in Steiner Bayreuth). Harnett, who worked alongside basketball for a cleaning company and whose external trademark was a mustache, was named Bayreuth's Sportsman of the Year by a local newspaper in 1981, making him the first basketball player to receive this award. He stayed in Bayreuth until 1983 and then moved to Bayer Leverkusen within the Bundesliga . He led the Rhinelander in the game year 1984/85 as team captain to win the German championship.

In 1985 he returned to Bayreuth and had meanwhile accepted German citizenship. He won the German championship title with Bayreuth in 1989 and the DBB Cup in 1988 and 1989. At the end of the 1988/89 season he announced his resignation from basketball because of hip problems, but made his return during the following season and temporarily strengthened the Bayreuth team, as it was thinned out due to injured players.

“Californian sun boy, great fighter, refuted the motto 'White men can't jump': His backward dunks were legend, and with Bo Dukes , Calvin Oldham , Mike Koch and Tony Reuss formed the framework of the double team. Never aloof, completely devoid of starry airs. A great person, ”said Harnett in retrospect in April 2017 by his former team-mate and later reporter for Bavarian television , Gottfried Oliwa . Harnett scored a total of 4996 points in the Bundesliga.

After his playing career ended, Harnett returned to the United States and worked for a medical technology company.
