Thomas "Tom" Schneeman (born December 11, 1942 ) is a former American basketball coach . He worked for the German clubs BG Steiner Bayreuth, Rhöndorfer TV and Mitteldeutscher BC, among others.

career

Schneeman worked in the United States first as a basketball coach at high schools, then as assistant coach of the teams at Washington State University and at the University of Detroit , as head coach of Seattle University .

In 1982 he became the coach of the German Bundesliga club USC Bayreuth and led the team to fifth place in the championship in 1982/83 and to the quarter-finals of the Korac-Cup European Cup , which was a sensation at the time.

For the 1983/84 season, Schneeman moved to Murray BC Edinburgh in Scotland and in 1984 also worked as the head coach of the British national team. Among other things, he looked after the national team during the elimination round for the 1984 Summer Olympics . Under Schneeman's leadership, the British won three games from nine games and thus missed out on qualifying for the Olympics. After a year he returned to Bayreuth. The club had meanwhile been renamed BG Steiner Optik and played in the 2nd Bundesliga after relegation in 1984. Schneeman was able to rely on players like Calvin Oldham , Georg Kämpf and Mike Boyle , he led Bayreuth to immediate promotion in the 1984/85 season and to the final of the DBB Cup as a second division team. In the Bundesliga season 1985/86, BG Steiner reached third place under Schneeman's leadership and came back to the cup final, but had to admit defeat there again. During a game against Osnabrück in 1986, Schneeman was represented at the Bayreuth Bank by his wife, as he himself had received a three-game ban due to insulting the referee. Schneeman took a seat on the opposite side of the field and communicated with his wife using sign language. The game was won with 97:63. His second term in Bayreuth ended after the end of the 1985/86 season.

Schneeman worked in the episode again in the USA, among other things as head coach of the Mississippi Jets and Wichita Falls Texans in the Central Basketball Association (CBA).

In January 1992 he started his third term in Bayreuth, but was unable to save the team from relegation from the Bundesliga. In the second division season 1992/93, the team marched under Schneeman's leadership with 32 wins and only four defeats through the southern season of the 2nd Bundesliga and celebrated their return to the Bundesliga. In the 1993/94 season Schneeman led BG Steiner into the playoff quarter-finals, after the end of the season it came to a separation.

Between 1996 and 1998 Schneeman was the head coach of Rhöndorfer TV in the Bundesliga. In the 1996/97 season he led the team to second place in the Bundesliga points round, and in the playoff quarter-finals they were eliminated by neighboring Bonn. 1997/98 the fifth place was reached, again came the end of the season in the quarter-finals, this time against Trier. With Richard Morton and Steven Key , Schneeman had two outstanding players in Rhöndorf at the time.

For the 1999/2000 season he took over the coaching position at the second division TK Hannover , but the team was withdrawn from the game in November 1999 for financial reasons.

In November 2000 he became coach of the second division Ludwigsburg , but complained about the lack of professional working conditions and left the club after just one game.

In the summer of 2001, Schneeman was hired by Bundesliga club Mitteldeutscher BC as head coach, and in early December 2001 the American was dismissed after only two of eleven Bundesliga games had been won under his leadership.

As a result, he appeared, among other things, at trainer training courses for the Russian Basketball Association and as a lecturer as part of a FIBA project in Malawi. After the end of his coaching career, Schneeman lived in Bayreuth, his wife's hometown.

Coaching style

Schneeman demanded a high level of discipline from his players and acted emotionally on the sidelines. Gesticulating and talking to the referees were among his characteristics as a coach. "His discussions with referees not only made technical fouls a habit, but also occasionally led to expulsion from the hall and even to a ban for three games," wrote the North Bavarian courier in a review of Schneeman's coaching career.

Die Welt reported in 1996 when Schneeman was a trainer in Rhöndorf: “Tantrums like those after the defeat against Hagen brought him the image of a choleric. The 52-year-old coach yelled at his players in the dressing room for four and a half minutes hand-stopped. "
