Benfica Lisbon (basketball)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The basketball department of Sport Lisboa e Benfica is one of the most successful in Portugal, so far it has celebrated 25 national championships, the last one in 2015, as well as 19 national cup wins. It had its most successful time in the mid-1990s, when it qualified three times in a row (1993/94 to 1995/96) for the main round of the European Cup and was able to beat well-known clubs. In particular, the 45 points that Carlos Lisboa contributed to the win against Partizan Belgrade in the second leg of the second qualifying round in the 1995/96 season are still considered one of the most important individual achievements in the history of Portuguese basketball. Another important player of this era was the Angolan international Jean-Jacques Conceição .
