Zvezdan Mitrović (Cyrillic: Звездан Митровић) (born February 19, 1970 in Podgorica ) is a Montenegrin basketball coach .

career

Mitrović began his career in the second half of the 1990s as an assistant coach at Budućnost Podgorica . In the 2001/02 season he took part with the team in the Euroleague . In 2002 he took up the position of head coach at Chimik Yuschne  in Ukraine  . He worked in Juschne until 2007 . In 2006 he reached the final of the European club competition FIBA EuroCup Challenge with the team , but lost there in a round trip against BK Ural from Russia .

From November 2007 to January 2011 he was the head coach of Kryvbasbasket-Lux Krywyj Rih in the Ukrainian city of Krywyj Rih . In 2009 he led Krywyj Rih to win the championship title in Ukraine. After a year at the capital city club BK Budiwelnyk Kiev (2011/12), with whom he won the Ukrainian cup competition, Mitrović went back to Yushne and looked after Chimik in the second half of the 2012/13 season. Partly at the same time as his duties in club basketball, he was assistant coach of the Montenegrin national team in 2012 and 2013. In January 2014 he was signed by the BK Azovmasch Mariupol (also Ukraine) and held the position of head coach there until May 2014.

In March 2015 Mitrović was signed by AS Monaco (at that time in second place in the second division of France ) as a coach. Since Mitrović initially did not have the coaching license required in the league, Philippe Beorchia initially appeared as head coach at Monaco's games in the official documents. After promotion in spring 2015, Mitrović supervised Monaco in the highest French league, ProA . The club from the Principality, which is endowed with large financial resources, was a newcomer in ProA, right in the top group. Mitrović led Monaco to the ProA semi-finals in the 2015/16 season after finishing the main round as first in the table. Also in the 2016/17 season, Monaco under Mitrović was in first place at the end of the ProA main round, but was eliminated in the quarter-finals. In the European club competition Champions League he reached the semi-finals with Monaco, but lost to Banvit from Turkey . In the 2017/18 season Mitrović made another step forward with the team from the principality. At the end of the main round of the French league, he was at the top of the table with Monaco for the third year in a row. He led Monaco in the final series for the French championship, but had to admit defeat Le Mans with 2: 3 wins. In the Champions League they moved into the final and lost it against AEK Athens . However, his time in Monaco was not without a title: in 2016, 2017 and 2018 he won the league cup with the team. Mitrović's style as a coach is characterized by strict defense schemes, in attack he gives his players the freedom to find their own solutions against opposing cover. According to his own statement, his work was shaped in particular by studying the coaching styles of Željko Obradović and Dušan Ivković .

During the summer break of 2018 he signed a three-year contract with ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne . Under his leadership, ASVEL was first in the ProA main round in 2018/19 and then won the championship title. The opponent in the final was his former team from Monaco. In May 2019 he also won the French cup competition with ASVEL. In the season 2019/20 Mitrovic stood with ASVEL in the French league on the second place, as the game year because of the spread of the coronavirus has been canceled. He also took part in the Euroleague with ASVEL 2019/20, where he recorded ten wins and 18 defeats with the team. During his tenure in Lyon-Villeurbanne, Mitrović was at the same time national coach of Montenegro and supervised them at the 2019 World Cup, among others. In May 2020 Mitrović was dismissed in Lyon-Villeurbanne. Club president Tony Parker  accused him of not keeping to agreements. According to Parker, the reasons for the split were not in the athletic field. Mitrović fought against the dismissal and called on the Euroleague to mediate in the dispute. When the mediation failed, he announced that he would take legal action against ASVEL.

In early July 2020, AS Monaco announced his return as head coach.
