Vilmantas Matkevičius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vilmantas Matkevičius (born May 5, 1960 ) is a Lithuanian basketball coach and former player.

career

Matkevičius moved from his Lithuanian homeland to Cuxhaven in 1996 and completed an apprenticeship in the housing industry. For the 2000/01 season he took up the post of head coach at SV Rot-Weiss Cuxhaven , which was then playing in the second regional league. Initially, the two-meter-tall center acted as a player-coach before he limited himself to his duties as a coach.

In 2003 he led Cuxhaven to promotion to the first regional league and in 2004 to the second basketball division . The team, which has now been renamed Cuxhaven BasCats , became a permanent fixture in the second highest German division under the leadership of the Lithuanian. In the 2006/07 season Matkevičius' troop landed on the third place in the standings of the northern season and thus qualified for the new 2nd Bundesliga ProA . From 2007 (and until 2011) his son Benas was his assistant coach. In 2008, under his leadership, Cuxhaven came second in the ProA, thus gaining the right to promotion, but did not apply for a license for the basketball league because the financial prerequisites and a suitable home ground for participation in the top German division were lacking. 2010 Matkevičius led the team again to the runner-up, but the club again renounced promotion. In May 2010, Cuxhaven moved into the final of the DBB Cup, which took place this season without the participation of first division clubs, and lost there 72:76 against Bayreuth.

Shortly before the start of the 2011/12 season, Matkevičius had to undergo hip surgery. As a result, he was unable to work until mid-February 2012 and was represented by his assistant Krists Plendišķis , who ultimately succeeded the Lithuanian when Matkevičius and the BasCats ended their collaboration at the end of February 2012.
