Burkhard Junge

Burkhard “Bobby” Junger (* 1947 ) is a former German basketball player and currency dealer. He was convicted in the context of the VW foreign exchange scandal.

Life

Junge played with MTV Wolfenbüttel in the basketball league and in the early 1970s alongside other Jürgen Loibl , Volkmar Knopke and Jürgen Wohlers in the European Cup. Later he took part in German championships with old men’s teams of the MTV.

As a functionary, Junge was involved in basketball events in the city of Wolfenbüttel for 25 years , including from 2008 to 2019 as President of MTV Wolfenbüttel from 2012 Herzöge Basketball e. V. In this office he was involved in setting up a comprehensive cooperation between the dukes and the Bundesliga club Basketball Löwen Braunschweig . After the Wolfenbüttel team was relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga ProB in 2019, he negotiated the transfer of the regional league participation rights with the MTB Baskets Hannover and retired as President of the Dukes. Before joining the Dukes of Wolfenbüttel, he had already worked for the predecessor club Wolfenbüttel Dukes in the field of player engagements and sponsorship support.

The trained banker worked for the Volkswagen group from 1970 . In 1980 he took over the management of the foreign exchange department at VW. In February 1990 he was sentenced to six years imprisonment by the Braunschweig regional court in the so-called VW foreign exchange scandal. According to Der Spiegel, the case was "one of the greatest known economic crimes of the post-war period". In September 1987, Junge, who was the main suspect alongside the foreign exchange broker Joachim Schmidt, confessed after denying fraud and speaking of a plot. Overall, VW suffered a loss of 480 million DM.
