Jürgen Wohlers (born June 27, 1945 in Wolfenbüttel ) is a former German national basketball player . He was a participant of the XX. 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich and until 1995 record national player of the German Basketball Federation ( DBB ).

Life

Jürgen Wohlers began his career in the youth teams of MTV Wolfenbüttel . In 1963 he became German youth champion with MTV under the direction of coach Klaus Nürnberger . Thanks to his achievements in the finals, he was appointed to the German national team by national coach Yakovos Bilek , although at that time he had never played a game in the men's area. Wohlers played for his hometown club almost throughout his athletic career. He was only active for one season at a time for the Oldenburg TB , later the USC Munich . In 1972 he won the DBB Cup with MTV Wolfenbüttel , and in 1975/1976 the 1.99 meter tall winger and his club took second place in the championship and DBB Cup behind TuS 04 Leverkusen . In the opinion of Klaus Nürnberger, Wohlers, together with Volkmar Knopke, was the outstanding player on the MTV team during this time. While Knopke was a natural, Wohlers fought for his success through tireless training work.

Wohlers was one of seven DBB Olympians who were appointed to the fifty-strong " 1972 Olympic squad " for the 1972 Summer Olympics basketball tournament in Munich . Under the responsibility of national coaches Miloslav Kříž and Günter Hagedorn , he played with the DBB national team in May 1969 the qualifying tournament for the FIBA European Championship 1969 in Thessaloniki ( Greece ) and with national coach Theodor Schober in September 1971 the FIBA European Championship 1971 in Germany, with the DBB as Organizer and host. At the 1972 Summer Olympics , Wohlers was the captain of the German basketball team. He played in all nine games of the DBB selection and scored 67 points, in 36 fouls whistled against him. Wohlers himself described Olympia '72, including the march into the stadium opening ceremony, as the high point of his national team time.

In total, Wohlers played 174 international matches in the DBB A national team, in addition to numerous appearances in the youth and B national teams. As the record national player of the DBB, he was only replaced by Hansi Gnad in 1995 , who had 181 appearances in the senior national team when he ended his basketball career in 1998.

After the end of his time as a basketball Bundesliga player, Wohlers remained active in sports, including as a maxi basketball player for his club MTV Wolfenbüttel. With his basketball mates from among former league player, he took the old boys' age regularly federal best games in part and was several times German champions.

Jürgen Wohlers' children, Victoria and Moritz, also became basketball players. Moritz Wohlers played in 2008/2009 in the basketball league with the Eisbären Bremerhaven .
