Ingo Freyer (born February 7, 1971 in Wolfsburg ) is a former German basketball player and today's coach.

Career

player

Ingo Freyer was born in Wolfsburg and moved to Wedel with his family as a toddler . He learned to play basketball at SC Rist Wedel , won the German B youth championship with the club in 1988 and played in the 2nd Bundesliga. Arne Malsch was one of his teammates in Wedel . He also played in the German junior national team. In 1991 the Guard moved to ALBA Berlin in the basketball league . In 1995 Freyer, who worked as a DJ in his spare time and had an extensive music collection, won the Korać Cup with the Berliners . In addition, he was twice German runner-up with ALBA. For the capital city team, he scored a total of 1510 points in 193 games. In 1995 he moved to Brandt Hagen .

In 1997 he played for the Italian club Caserta and then moved to SSV Ulm. With Ulm he reached the championship final in 1998 and was third in the cup . From 1998 to 2002 he was active for SSV Weißenfels and then rose to the Bundesliga with BG Ludwigsburg (2001/2002) and TSV Quakenbrück (2002/2003) , which he had already achieved with Weißenfels in 1999 . He ended his active career after the 2003/2004 season with the Eisbären Bremerhaven.

In total, he came to 39 games for the German national team . He made his debut against Romania in May 1991 . In 1995 he took part in the European Championship in Greece .

Trainer

From 2004 to 2007 Freyer was the coach of his home club SC Rist Wedel in the Regionalliga Nord. From the beginning of the 2007/2008 season he was a trainer at Phoenix Hagen . In the 2008/2009 season he led the club to promotion to the first Bundesliga - for the first time as a coach, after he had previously been promoted three times as a player with his respective clubs. In the 2012/13 season he led Hagen into the playoffs. In April 2013 Freyer extended his contract in Hagen prematurely until 2015 and in March 2015 until 2017. In November 2016, the Hagen club was revoked the Bundesliga license with immediate effect. In February 2017 it was announced that the planning of a new beginning without Freyer would take place. “In a total of ten years Ingo Freyer has become the longest-serving coach in German professional basketball and the most successful Hagen coach in the club's history. As the absolute darling of the public on the sidelines, Ingo Freyer shaped one of the most successful times at the Volme, ”his services as a Hagen coach were recognized in the club's report. Although Phoenix Hagen had smaller financial resources compared to other Bundesliga clubs, Freyer led the team to stay in the league every year they belonged to the first division and sometimes also to the championship round. Freyer succeeded in doing this with a fast and attacking style of play that became his trademark as a coach.

For the 2017/18 season, Freyer switched to the Bundesliga club Gießen 46ers as head coach . As in Hagen, he also used a tactic in central Hesse that is characterized by a fast-paced offensive game. After a successful start to the 2018 season, his contract was extended until 2021.
