Johann Bernhard Wilbrand (born March 8, 1779 in Clarholz (near Herzebrock), † May 9, 1846 in Gießen ) was a German romantic physician , physiologist and natural philosopher .

Life

Wilbrand studied from 1801 to 1805 the theoretical subjects of medicine in Münster and the practical subjects in Würzburg and Bamberg . From 1809 he was professor of comparative anatomy, physiology and natural history and from 1817 director of the botanical garden in Giessen .

He was an important representative of Schelling's natural philosophical medicine , who often got into controversial disputes with physicians who were more strictly scientifically oriented.

His work concerned respiratory and circulatory physiology. He also did research on comparative anatomy, botany and zoology. On November 28, 1818 he became a member (matriculation no. 1122) of the Leopoldina with the academic surname Arcturus .

In the gallery rooms of the Samson house in his birthplace Herzebrock-Clarholz , he is remembered in the “Wilbrand room”.

Trivia
