Axel Hinrich Murken

Axel Hinrich Murken (born December 2, 1937 in Gütersloh ) is a German doctor, medical and art historian.

Axel Hinrich Murken studied medicine, art history and archeology from 1959 to 1973. On July 24, 1965, he passed his medical state examination at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster , where he received his doctorate in the same year. med. been awarded a doctorate. In 2001 he was at the University of Bonn with an art historical investigation to the work of the surrealist Edgar Ende Dr. phil. PhD.

After two years of medical assistance in various hospitals, he received his license to practice medicine on June 5, 1968. After working as an assistant doctor at the Halle (Westf.) Municipal Hospital and in the Sarepta hospitals in Bielefeld, he began a scientific career as a medical historian on April 1, 1969. First he worked as an assistant at the University of Düsseldorf , where he qualified as a professor in 1973 in the subject of " History of Medicine ".

From 1975 to 1981 he was a professor at the Institute for Theory and History of Medicine at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. From 1974 to 1982 Murken represented the subjects “History of Medicine” and “Medical Terminology” as a lecturer at the University Clinic of the University of Essen . Subsequently, until his retirement in 2003, he was professor and director of the Institute for the History of Medicine and Hospitals at the University Hospital Aachen .

Murken is the son of gynecologist Dr. med. Diedrich Murken (1893–1958) and Elisabeth Murken, b. Goebel (1908-1998). He is married to the art historian and painter Christa Murken and has three children, including the artist Julian Murken .

Murken is the author of numerous books and articles on the history of medicine, hospitals and art history, including the standard textbook on medical terminology . He was a member of the founding assembly of the "Free International University for Creativity and Interdisciplinary Research eV", initiated by Joseph Beuys , which took place on April 27, 1973 in Beuys' studio on Drakeplatz. In 1976 he founded the Murken-Altrogge publishing house together with Christa Murken , where he is editor of the series Studies on the History of Hospitals and Studies on the History of Medicine, Art and Literature . From 1979 to 2009 he was chairman of the German Society for Hospital History. From 1977 to 1993 he was a founding member and chairman of the "Society of Friends and Patrons for a German Hospital Museum".

From 1972 to 2010 he edited the journal Historia Hospitalium . He is the founder of the Christian Heyden Prize for the promotion of building culture in the Gütersloh district.

In addition to the history of hospitals and medicine, Murken's main interest is the reflection of medicine in painting. Furthermore, his scientific work applies to art history and outsider art , especially in their relation to suffering, pain and healing. It has important collections on the work of Joseph Beuys (healing powers of art) and on Edgar Ende's painting .

He donated his collection of around 4,000 volumes on medical books for children and young people since 1800 to the picture book museum in Troisdorf. Murken is co-author of the medical dictionary edited by Wolfgang U. Eckart and Christoph Gradmann , the third edition of which was published in 2006.
