The picture book museum in Troisdorf is the only one of its kind in Europe. It exhibits artistic picture book illustrations, historical and modern picture books as well as artist books .

It is housed in the Wissem Castle in Troisdorf. The Troisdorf picture book prize is awarded every two years in the picture book museum.

history

In 1982 the Troisdorf merchant Wilhelm Alsleben donated his extensive collection of historical picture book original illustrations and modern picture books to the city. This collection should be made available to the public and so the museum was opened in Wissem Castle. The bright red, classical building was erected in 1840 using old building fabric from the 16th century. The proximity to the city forest and several animal enclosures make the picture book museum and Wissem Castle a popular destination.

Exhibitions

In addition to the original exhibits from the Alsleben Foundation, there are very important and rare objects in the possession of the picture book museum. Among other things, works by children's book authors Helme Heine , Janosch and Leo Lionni .

  • Brüggemann Collection: In 1995, the youth book expert Professor Theodor Brüggemann (1921–2006) gave his collection of historical children's books, comprising around 2,000 copies, to the museum. The oldest examples date back to 1498.
  • Waldmann Collection: The Swiss couple Elisabeth and Richard Waldmann have collected over 800 books, illustrations, paintings and graphics on the subject of Little Red Riding Hood in more than 30 years . The oldest works come from the 18th century. The Waldmann couple donated the extensive collection to the picture book museum in 2002. Today it can be viewed in a specially designed room in the museum.
  • Permanent loan from Janosch: In 1999, the well-known picture book artist Janosch decided to give his original picture book illustrations to the Troisdorf City Museum on permanent loan. The picture book museum thus has the world's largest collection of Janosch original drawings.
