Westphalia ( Westfalen ) is an agricultural community in Osage County in the state of Missouri in the United States .
Location and population
Westphalia is located in the northern heights of the Ozark Mountains. The place is located 15 miles from Jefferson City in Osage County. 320 people live in Westphalia, spread over 137 households.
history
In 1835 the place was founded by a group of German immigrants from Paderborn and Oelde . Dr. Bernhard Bruns and his brothers were the first to set up farms here in Maries Valley and initially named the new place New Westphalia. Nikolaus Hesse was one of the founders . The place was later renamed. In 1848 the St. Joseph Church was built and the post office opened.
Joseph Rademacher , Bishop of Fort Wayne, was born in Westphalia in 1840.
