action

Rosanna is terminally ill and wants to be buried next to her deceased daughter in the village cemetery. However, there are only three grave sites left, so that Rosanna's husband Marcello is forced to prevent the villagers from dying in order to grant his wife's last wish. Marcello becomes a lifesaver and nurse, even makes corpses disappear, restricts the serving of wine in his trattoria and donates blood. He's even ready to make up with his old rival from his youth, Capestro, in order to solve the problem. Meanwhile, Rosanna is looking for a successor for herself and finds what she is looking for in her younger, single sister Cecilia, whom she intends to couple with Marcello. Antonio, Capestro's nephew, who returned to the village to work as a lawyer after completing his law degree, is also interested in Cecilia. 2 of the remaining 3 graves are occupied by deaths in the village. Eventually Rosanna collapses in the church and shortly afterwards Marcello has to inform the assembled village community in front of his bar of Rosanna's death. Rosanna is buried in the last remaining grave next to her deceased daughter - as she wished. Antonio now wants to confess his love to Cecilia and drives to Marcello's bar, where she works. There he learned from some men that Marcello and Cecilia wanted to travel to relatives in Como and were on their way to the train station. He rushes to the train station to declare his love for Cecilia and to prevent her from leaving with Marcello. The woman in black, whom he takes for Cecilia, turns out to be Rosanna, who has secured her grave with her fictitious death and her funeral and now wants to see the world with Marcello. Marcello explains to him that Cecilia is hiding and will be waiting for him tonight. Marcello rides the train to the airport with Rosanna to fly to New York.

Reviews

The Rhein-Zeitung writes: “A timeless Italian ambience - with a slight 50s flair - resonates through the film. Afternoon sun paints warm, golden plays of color on the crumbling houses and in the narrow alleys of the mountain village: The film is not only a pleasure because of the immense charisma of its leading actors - because of the good friendship between Reno and Ruehl, who was already a mini-skirt friend in the " King of the Fishermen "bewitched, their screen marriage also benefits."

Prisma-online says: "The British" Mr. Bean ”director Paul Weiland managed a wonderful Italian village comedy in which he alternates between romance and black crime grotesque with a wink. Jean Reno embodies the main role of the melancholy dreamer and everyday hero with sensitive integrity. "

The lexicon of the international film judges: "A helpless blend of clichés swaying back and forth between comedy and sentimental melodrama, which can neither convince psychologically nor with its thick joke."
