Karl Adolf Ludwig Freiherr Bachofen von Echt (born March 12, 1830 in Oelde , Westphalia , † May 22, 1922 in Vienna ) was an Austrian brewery entrepreneur .

biography

Karl Adolf Bachofen von Echt came from the old Limburg family Bachofen von Echt and was born as the son of the Prussian forestry councilor Karl Bachofen von Echt at Haus Geist near Oelde in Westphalia. He studied engineering and chemistry from 1848 to 1853 at the University of Prague . In 1854 he began his professional practice at his brother Clemens' sugar factory in Libesnitz , which he became head of after a few years. In Prague he met the daughter of the brewery owner Franz Xaver Bosch , Albertine, and married her.

After the death of his father-in-law, his brother-in-law and son of the owner, Franz Bosch, approached Bachofen and asked him to buy the Nussdorf brewery . Bachofen agreed to the contract and arrived in Nussdorf on May 15, 1865 with his family and his dog, Othello . The brewery was in a difficult position at the time and although Bachofen knew the theory of the brewery, he had to become more familiar with the practice. He traveled extensively to learn about new developments in the field and introduced them to the brewery. With a lot of skill and diligence, he was able to reorganize the company and make it one of the leading breweries in Austria.

In 1872 he was elected mayor of Nussdorf and remained so for almost 20 years until Nussdorf was incorporated into Vienna. Between 1891 and 1895 he was a liberal member of the Vienna City Council .

Due to his fortune, he developed into a great collector, especially of paintings by Adalbert Stifter . He was a member of the Numismatic Society and owned a large collection of coins and medals , some of which he commissioned himself. He dedicated a medal to his friend Peter Rosegger for his 50th birthday. Bachofen was also the founder of the Ornithological Society . Because of his interest in aviculture , he had a medal minted on the occasion of the carrier pigeon competition Vienna-Berlin. A large part of his collection of Roman coins was bought by the Imperial and Royal Kunsthistorisches Museum .

Around 1896, together with Johann von Medinger, he was appointed kuk court supplier for beer. Although the brewery incorrectly printed the title "kuk Hofbräuhaus" on the letterhead, this was only prohibited by decree later in 1899, as the brewery was not owned by the Aryan Islands. Upon request, an exception was made in 1900 and the title was changed to "kuk Hofbräuer". Bachofen was finally raised to the baron status around 1906 by Emperor Franz Joseph I.

On January 23, 1919, the Adalbert Stifter memorial made possible by him was unveiled in the Türkenschanzpark . On October 23, 1922, Bachofen was honored in a large commemoration ceremony on the occasion of the opening of the Adalbert Stifter painting collection. The Bachofengasse in Nussdorf was named in his honor .
