The Nußdorfer Bierbrauerei was a brewery in Nussdorf , now Vienna , Austria .

history

The brewery building was originally built in 1690 by the Jesuit order as a college for theology students . After the order was dissolved in 1713, it was used as an arms depot, after which it became private property.

The brothers Anton and Franz Xaver Bosch (* October 4, 1789; † May 12, 1860) were sons of the domain administrator of Prince Oettingen zu Wallerstein in Bavaria . At that time, Anton Bosch bought the Jedlsee brewery , which at that time was still outside Vienna. In 1819 he bought the property of the former Jesuit college from his brother Franz Xaver. Parts of the college such as the former chapel were preserved and integrated into the newly founded brewery.

Bosch became successful and by 1840 the brewery had an output of 54,000 buckets. He had the "Bockkeller" set up, a beer garden and, in 1842, a wooden observation tower with a view of the Danube and the Vienna Woods . The tower burned down in World War II. The brewery inn on Nussdorfer Platz was called the "Golden Rose" and offered space for a very large number of guests. Bosch was married to Josefine Feldmüller from Persenbeug. The owners after FX Bosch were:

  • His sixth son Franz Xaver Bosch († 1871) from 1860 to 1864,
  • his eighth son Rudolf Bosch († 1877) from 1864 to 1877,
  • his son-in-law Georg Räch from 1864 to 1878,
  • his daughter-in-law Karoline Bosch from 1877 to 1885

Karl Adolf Bachofen from Echt sen. was married to Albertine Bosch. Bosch's heirs asked him to join the company and help. From 1865 he was also the head of the brewery and helped it to great success. As a public partner, he was finally named in the commercial register. In 1878 Bosch's grandson -in-law, Johann Medinger jun., Became a partner.

Beer production increased steadily. Around 1900, around 10,000 to 15,000 meter-centimeters of malt were sold annually in addition to their own needs .

The malt house existed until 1873 with two Darren, 1873 two Völkner'sche were Darren , 1882 Ringhoffer'sche and 1896 and in 1898 two Topf'sche Darren set up. The first mechanical malt turner was introduced in 1894.

The barley cleaning shop was set up to work 300 q ( hundredweight ) barley per day. 50000-55000 q barley to 24 were processed per year Tennen 6000m² expansion. The malting machines were operated by electrical power transmission since 1896. The brewhouse , which was built from scratch in 1893, had a capacity of 1260 hectoliters per day.

The cold store was rebuilt in 1896. The refrigerated ship space was sufficient for 420 hl. In 1878 the first sprinkler cooling device was installed in Austria (patent Neubecher in Offenbach), which was followed by new devices in 1897. The fermentation and storage cellars were expanded in accordance with the respective expansion of the company and were all provided with artificial cooling. The barrel storage facility was set up for machine operation in 1890, and the barrel laundry facility was provided with barrel washing machines in 1895.

The boiler house contained two dry fermentation boilers with around 350 m² heating surface and a steam superheater and a Tenbrink boiler with 80 m² heating surface. In the machine houses built in 1886 and 1896 there were three steam engines with 80, 100 and 200 horse power, directly connected to the compressors of the three refrigeration machines from the Linde system, whose output corresponds to 100,000 kg of ice per day.

The first Linde refrigeration machine was installed in 1886.

Electric lighting was introduced in 1886. This was provided with electricity by two dynamo machines with 58 horse power, 500 incandescent lamps and 6 arc lamps. This was followed by the power transmission for the malt house and bottled beer department. The air compressors set up from 1895 to 1897 were used to operate small power machines in the storage and fermentation cellars and for the barley laundry, which was set up in 1897. The buildings and facilities belonging to the brewery covered 12 hectares of land.

In 1890 the first workers' house in breweries was built. The number of beds was 200. The building met all modern and hygienic requirements, contained dormitories, dining rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, drying chambers, was all electrically lit and provided with steam heating and a ventilation system. In 1893 a second workers' house was built for the married workers, containing 20 apartments, each with a small garden, and with facilities similar to the first.

Karl Adolf Bachofen from Echt jun. became a partner from 1895.

The company was called the Nussdorfer Bierbrauerei von Bachofen & Medinger . Beer from Nussdorf was exported abroad and the imperial court was one of the customers. Both owners were appointed imperial and royal purveyors to the court at the end of the 19th century . Although the brewery incorrectly printed the title “kuk Hof-Brauhaus” on the letterhead, this was not forbidden by decree until 1899, as the brewery was not owned by the Aryan Islands . Upon request, an exception was made in 1900 and the title was changed to "kuk Hof-Brauer". In 1905 the Bachofen family bought the so-called Altenburger Freihof behind Nußdorfer Platz, presumably to forestall the competition ( Pilsen brewery ). In 1908 the company was converted into a public limited company.

After the brewery was taken over by the Schwechat brewery in 1950 , operations in Nussdorf were closed. The production facilities were dismantled and sold to Brazil . The Brazilian company with Austrian participation was called “Companhia Paulista de Cervejas Vienenses” and the beer was called “Vienense”. In 1965 the main front of the listed building was demolished and built with row houses.

Nussdorfer Food and Beverage GmbH

In 1984 a descendant of the owner, Henrik Freiherr Bachofen von Echt, revived the brewing tradition with Nussdorfer Nahrungsmittel- und Genussmittel GmbH . Baron Bachofen von Echt is a Swiss citizen and worked for a while as a nuclear physicist during the construction of the planned Zwentendorf nuclear power plant. He also raised cattle in New Mexico. In 1984 he started brewing beer from family recipes himself in the Freihof. They made “Nussdorfer Braustuben”, “Nussdorfer Doppelhopfen hell” of the Kölsch type, “Nussdorfer St. Thomasbräu” of the Bayrisch-Alt type, dry stout “Sir Henry's English Stout” and a whiskey malt beer “Nussdorfer Old Whiskey Bier”. The annual output was around 5,000 hectoliters. The restaurant was located in the neighboring "Nußdorfer Braustub'n", which was in Heiligenstädter Straße 205b. In 2004 the brewery Nussdorf closed.

Today in Nussdorf, Bachofengasse and Bockkellerstraße are a reminder of the Nussdorf brewery.
