Otto Beckmann (* around 1476 in Warburg in the prince-bishopric of Paderborn ; † May 4, 1540 there ) was a German theologian, pastor and humanist.

Life

Born as the son of councilor Anton Beckmann, he attended the Dominican school in his hometown and then moved to the college in Deventer , where he received his training from Alexander Hegius, among others . He then enrolled at the University of Leipzig in the summer semester of 1500 , acquired the degree of Baccalaureus there in the winter semester of 1501 and then stayed for a while in Halberstadt , where he worked as a clergyman and obtained benefices there.

In 1507 he continued his studies at the University of Wittenberg and on February 21, 1508 acquired the academic degree of a master's degree . Inspired by Richardus Sbrulius , he dealt with poetry during this time. After he had joined the humanistic circle of Christoph Scheurl , he was accepted as a lecturer for Latin grammar at the Artistic Faculty in the Senate in 1510, which corresponded to an adjunct .

In 1514 he acquired a canonical at the castle church , turned to legal studies and in autumn 1517 received the licentiate of both rights. He then took over the office of syndic at the castle church, which was connected with a professorship at the institutes. During the time of Scheurl's departure and the arrival of Philipp Melanchthon , he was the university's most important humanist. He wrote a foreword to the latter when his inaugural address went to press. Beckmann was in close contact with Andreas Bodenstein . However, he continued to represent scholastic Catholicism, so that he had to leave Wittenberg after the Wittenberg movement in 1523.

In the same year he went to Warburg, where he took over a pastor's office. Here he appeared in writings against the Reformation that Martin Luther had set off in Wittenberg in 1525 . In 1527 he became provost at St. Aegidii in Münster, Westphalia . He took part in the religious discussions in 1528 and 1530 and left the city after the unrest caused by the Anabaptists . He also took part in the Diet of Augsburg in 1530. Then he was pastor in Oelde until 1534 , from where he took part in the Provincial Synod in Cologne in 1536 .
