Alexander Hegius
Alexander Hegius (* 1439 / 1440 in Burgsteinfurt , † 27. December 1498 in Deventer ), a German was a humanist , a member of the Brethren of the Common Life , and later priests of the Catholic Church.
Life
Hegius was not, as long assumed, born around 1433 in Heek as the son of a Schulzen , but only in 1439/40 in Burgsteinfurt. He probably attended the Latin school in Münster and probably met Rudolf von Langen here . There is evidence that he studied in Rostock , where he was matriculated as "Sanderus Hek de Stenfordia" in the winter semester 1456/57 and was examined as a master's degree in the winter semester 1462/63.
In 1469 he became rector of the city's "Great School" in Wesel and in 1474 of the collegiate school of St. Martin in Emmerich . He owed this appointment to the provost Count Moritz von Spiegelberg , a friend of the new humanistic education. From autumn 1483 until his death he worked as rector of the monastery of St. Lebuinus owned school in Deventer and reformed it in a humanistic sense by including Greek teaching in the curriculum .
He met Rudolf Agricola , who introduced Hegius to the circle of friends of leading personalities of northwest German humanism who met in the Cistercian monastery of Adwert near Groningen . Hegius gained influence on humanism less through his works than primarily through his students, who in addition to Erasmus of Rotterdam also included Johannes Butzbach , Hermanus Buschius , Johannes Murmellius and Johannes Peringius .
Hegius was influenced by the Devotio moderna , a religious renewal movement of the 14th and 15th centuries related to German mysticism . Century. This sought an individual piety in following Jesus . Hegius was ordained a priest as an older man .
Today a secondary school in Ahaus , the Alexander-Hegius-Gymnasium , and two other schools in Heek and Deventer bear his name.
