Moritz Graf von Spiegelberg (also of Spiegelberg and Pyrmont * 1406 / 07 , † 3. June 1483 in Cologne ) was a canon in Cologne and Probst in Emmerich .

Born under the Lower Saxon Count von Spiegelberg , who were lords of the castle in the Diocese of Hildesheim , Moritz embarked on a spiritual career. The Cologne bishop Dietrich II von Moers was his uncle. The boy Moritz became Abbot of Corvey as early as 1418, and one year later he entered the Cologne Cathedral Chapter. He studied in Leipzig in 1427 and then in Rome, took part in the Basel Council in 1431 as faithful to the Pope , remained canon in Cologne, where he again attended the university and was the most regular visitor to the chapter meetings, and in 1444 also became provost of the collegiate monastery of St. Martini in Emmerich . Until April 1669 he was also pastor in Schmalkalden through papal commission , then handed the parish over to Wilhelm Ludolphi. His death was honored by an epitaph of the student friend and humanist Rudolf Agricola .

His passion was books. In 1453 he acquired a manuscript from Boccaccio De casibus virorum illustrium . Because of the difficult situation of Archbishop Ruprecht von der Pfalz (Cologne) , who he supported, he had to move to Emmerich for a long time from around 1460, where he met humanists like Rudolf Agricola and other guests at the collegiate school there . At his invitation, Antonius Liber became head of the chapter school there, but probably dismissed in 1473 due to the resistance of the other canons against a staunch humanist. His successor was Alexander Hegius . Spiegelberg collected books and works of art that he donated to the monastery or the cathedral chapter.

Moritz had two illegitimate sons, Jheronymus and Jaspar (Kaspar): one started studying, the other applied for a higher position with the cloth shearers . Her parentage was a problem.
