Holy Roman Empire
- May 5 : The battle on Etzel begins the Old Zurich War over the legacy of the male Toggenburgs who died out in 1436 . Schwyz under Ital Reding the Elder defeated Zurich under Mayor Rudolf Stüssi in battle.
- Intense diplomatic activities follow the fighting. On the mediation of the cities of Basel , Strasbourg , Constance , Schaffhausen , Überlingen , Rheinfelden , Ravensburg , St. Gallen and the messengers from Bern , Lucerne , Solothurn , Zug , Uri , Unterwalden , Appenzell and Baden , an armistice is concluded on May 13th .
- June 24th : After the death of his father Friedrich IV , the twelve-year-old Siegmund becomes Duke of Upper Austria . He is under the tutelage of his cousin Friedrich V of Austria .
Hussite Wars
- May 4 : In the Battle of Grotniki during the Hussite Wars, the Confederate Polish Hussites, led by Spytko von Mahlstein, are defeated by the Polish royal army, led by Bishop Zbigniew Oleśnicki from Krakow . The outcome of the battle ultimately leads to the downfall of the Hussite movement in Poland .

- The Hanseatic-Dutch War continues as a mutual privateer war .
Kalmar Union
- The peace of Vordingborg of 1435, which was disadvantageous for Denmark after the defeat in the war against the Hanseatic League , - combined with the Engelbrekt uprising in Sweden - made King Erik VII vulnerable to the Imperial Council . He was initially deposed by the Danish and then by the other Imperial Councilors of the Kalmar Union after he had retired to Gotland .

Council and Papacy
Pope Eugene IV concludes a union agreement with the Greek Orthodox Church . This success, which arouses hopes for an end to the Eastern Schism that has persisted in the Christian Church since 1054 , gives the Pope a great reputation and weakens the Council of Basle , which is critical of the Pope, and which adhered to conciliarism . Eugene IV relocated the council that had split off a few years earlier from Ferrara to Florence on January 16 . Jakob von Sierck was appointed his successor and consecrated in the same year in the chapel of Malbrouck Castle, which belonged to his family . The new archbishop and elector takes over an almost bankrupt archdiocese.
