Life

He was a son of Archibald Douglas, 4th Earl of Douglas and his wife the Scottish Princess Margaret, Lady of Galloway.

While his father was still alive, he was made Count of Longueville in France . When his father was killed in the battle of Verneuil in 1424 , he was in Scotland and inherited his father as Earl of Douglas . When it became apparent that Archibald was still alive, the title of duke was confirmed to him, but the lands were not transferred.

From 1424 he was the Scottish ambassador to England and from 1437 regent of Scotland for the underage James II. He died of a fever and was buried in St Bride's Church in Douglas.
