Lochend House , also Restalrig Castle or Lochend Castle , is a country house in the Scottish city ​​of Edinburgh . The house, which incorporates the remains of a 16th century tower house with an L-shaped floor plan, is in the Lochend district and Historic Scotland has listed it as a Category B Historic Building.

history

The original castle was built on land that originally belonged to the Lestalric family but which had passed to Clan Logan von Restalrig in the early 14th century . This family kept the property until they found it because of their role in the Gowrie conspiracy against King James VI. had forfeited. It was then that the castle was burned down by William Gilmour from The Inch . Sir Robert Logan was the last member of the family to own the property.

From 1704 Lochend Castle was in the hands of Arthur Elphinstone, 6th Lord Balmerino . He was executed in London for his role in the Jacobite uprising in 1745 ; he was captured after the Battle of Culloden .

The gable wall of the Tower House was integrated into the current house, which was built around 1820. Today it belongs to the City of Edinburgh and it served as a children's center. In 2016 it was boarded up.

The house is on a rocky cliff in Lochend Park which has a steep slope down to a small lake on its west side. The original part of the house consists of a three-story block with an L-shaped floor plan and a steeply sloping roof. The inside has been completely changed, but there are still a few niches in the thick walls and the remains of a fireplace large enough to roast an ox over. Nearby, within the park, there is a pigeon house from the 16th century, which served as a boathouse in the 19th century and is now listed as a Category B historical building.
