Lord Balmerinoch (also Balmerino ) was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

Award and history of the title

The title was on July 11, 1606 by King James VI. bestowed on Sir James Elphinstone . For this purpose, the former Cistercian monastery Balmerino near Balmerino in Fife was converted into a secular rule for him . Sir James was the third-born son of the 3rd Lord Elphinstone and the maternal grandson of an illegitimate daughter of King Jacob IV.

His grandson, the 3rd Lord, inherited the title of 2nd Lord Coupar in January 1669 , which had been given to his uncle James Elphinstone (1590–1669), a younger son of the 1st Lord Balmerinoch, on December 20, 1607. The two titles were henceforth combined.

His grandson, the 6th Lord Balmerino, took part in the uprisings of the Jacobites , was taken prisoner in the Battle of Culloden , was ostracized on August 18, 1746 for high treason and executed on the same day. His two titles of nobility were thereby revoked.
