Margaret Douglas of Galloway

Margaret Douglas , called the Fair Maid of Galloway (* around 1435, † 1488  ?) Was a Scottish noblewoman, member of the Douglas family and Lady of Galloway.

Life

Margaret was a daughter of Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Douglas and his wife Euphemia, daughter of Patrick Graham, Earl of Strathearn. After the execution of her brothers, she received the reign of Galloway after the vast estates and County of Douglas fell to her great-uncle James the Gross, Earl of Avondale .

Margaret lived during the Scottish Civil War, in which King James II of Scotland sought to smash the supremacy of the Douglas family and began with the execution of Margaret's brothers William and David.

In her first marriage the Lady married William Douglas, 8th Earl of Douglas , the son of her great-uncle, then in 1449/50 his brother James Douglas, 9th Earl of Douglas . This marriage ended in divorce in 1455 after James was driven from Scotland and all of his property and title confiscated. In 1459/60 she married for the third time to John Stewart, 1st Earl of Atholl , with whom she had four daughters:
