Monument to a Liëwerfrau with Mang in downtown Solingen

Liëwermang is a term in the Solingen dialect for the High German term "delivery basket ".

Women transported the cutlery back and forth between the factories and the grinding shops ( called Schleifkotten in Solingen dialect ), which were mostly located outside of rivers and streams due to the use of water power. They picked up the raw blades from the factory and took them to the kotten of the grinder (usually the husband) who worked them. After this step of processing, the Liëwerfrau carried the intermediate products either back to the factory or to another grinder, who subjected the semi-finished products to another work step . During the transport the delivery basket (the mang ) was carried on the head.

In memory of the Liëwermang, the monument at Fronhof in Solingen was designed by Erlefried Hoppe (1910 - 1992) and inaugurated on September 13, 1958.

On November 15, 2019, Lord Mayor Tim Kurzbach inaugurated the Liëwer women traffic light on Grunewaldstrasse with appropriately designed motifs. In the future, this will be the starting and finishing point for the planned Liëwerfrauenwanderweg from the Wipperaue over various stream valleys. The funding application has been submitted.
