Alexander Gordon, 3rd Earl of Huntly
Alexander Gordon, 3rd Earl of Huntly (* before 1464 ; † January 16, 1524 in Perth ) was a Scottish nobleman .
Alexander was the eldest surviving son of George Gordon, 2nd Earl of Huntly , and his wife, the Scottish Princess Annabella, daughter of King James I. In 1501 he succeeded his father as Earl of Huntly .
Alexander received substantial donations from the Crown and commanded the left wing of the Scottish Army at the Battle of Flodden Field on September 9, 1513. He was one of the few Scottish nobles who survived this battle. In 1517 he was a member of the Scottish Regency Council.
The Earl was married twice, first to Lady Joan Stewart († 1510), daughter of John Stewart, 1st Earl of Atholl , in second marriage to Elizabeth Gray († 1526), widow of John Lyon, 4th Lord Glamis , daughter of Andrew Gray, 2nd Lord Gray . He had the following children with his first wife:
- Lady Janet Gordon, ⚭ Archibald Campbell, 4th Earl of Argyll ;
- Lady Jane Gordon, ⚭ (1) around 1506 Colin Campbell, 3rd Earl of Argyll, ⚭ (2) after 1529 Duncan Stewart, Younger of Appin;
- John Gordon, Lord Gordon († 1517), Master of Huntly, ⚭ 1510 Margaret Stewart, daughter of King James IV ;
- Alexander Gordon of Strathavon;
- William Gordon († 1577), Bishop of Aberdeen;
- Lady Christian Gordon, ⚭ after 1503 Sir Robert Menzies of that Ilk.
Since he survived his eldest son John, his son George Gordon inherited the title of Earl of Huntly in 1524 .
