The title was created on April 17, 1599 for George Gordon, 6th Earl of Huntly . Together with the Marquessate he was awarded the subordinate titles Earl of Enzie and Lord Gordon of Badenoch . As early as 1576 he had inherited the title Earl of Huntly from his father , which had been given to his ancestor Sir Adam Gordon of Huntly in 1445 . All titles mentioned belong to the Peerage of Scotland.

His son, who later became 2nd Marquess, had been awarded the title Viscount of Aboyne in the Peerage of Scotland on April 20, 1632 , with the special rule that this title, as soon as he died or inherited the marquess title, to his second-born son, the Hon. James Gordon should fall. This title expired when this very second Viscount died childless in February 1649.

The 4th Marquess was raised on November 1, 1684 in the Peerage of Scotland to Duke of Gordon with the subordinate titles Earl of Huntly and Enzie , Viscount of Inverness and Lord Badenoch, Lochaber, Strathavon, Balmore, Auchindoun, Garthie and Kincardine . The 4th Duke was elevated to Earl of Norwich , in the County of Norwich , and Baron Gordon of Huntley , in the County of Gloucester , on July 2, 1784 in the Peerage of Great Britain . He also inherited the title Baron Mordaunt, created on May 4, 1529 in the Peerage of England , from his grandmother in 1819 . When the 5th Duke died in 1836, the titles created in 1684 and 1784 expired, and the Barony of Mordaunt has been an abeyant ever since .

The Marquessate of Huntly fell in 1836 to the distant relative George Gordon, 5th Earl of Aboyne , who became the 9th Marquess of Huntly. However , the House of Lords did not recognize his claim to the subordinate titles Earl of Enzie , Earl of Huntly and Lord Gordon of Badenoch . In 1795 he had inherited from his father the title Earl of Aboyne created on September 10, 1660 in the Peerage of Scotland along with the subordinate title Lord Gordon of Strathaven and Glenlivet , which was created at the same time, and he was in the Peerage of the United on August 11, 1815 Kingdom the title of Baron Meldrum , of Morven in the County of Aberdeen .

The eldest son of the Marquess leads as a probable title heir ( Heir Apparent ) since 1836 the courtesy title Earl of Aboyne , whose Heir Apparent the courtesy title Lord Strathavon .
