Mariano de la Paz Graëlls y de la Aguera , also Graells y de la Agüera , (born January 24, 1809 in Tricio , † February 14, 1898 in Madrid ) was a Spanish entomologist , zoologist , doctor and botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Graells ". He was a pioneer in forensic entomology (insects on cadavers).

Life

His father was a doctor and a Catalan from Balaguer , his mother from Valladolid . Graells grew up in Barcelona and began studying medicine there in 1827 (diploma in 1833). In 1835 he received his doctorate there. In addition to medicine and surgery, he also studied natural sciences (botany, physics, chemistry, entomology) and belonged to the circle around the naturalist Antoni Martí Franquès (1750-1832). He was involved in the fight against the cholera epidemic in Barcelona in 1835, became a member of the Academy of Sciences in Barcelona and fought an insect plague on elms and poplars there. He then received a chair in entomology in Barcelona. In 1837 he became professor of zoology at the Zoological Museum in Madrid on the recommendation of Mariano La Gasca , who became his mentor, and in 1845 director of the Royal Botanical Garden. He later took over the chair of comparative anatomy and physiology at the University of Madrid.

Graells also dealt with fish and mussel farming and other issues of applied zoology.

The Rio Napo tamarin (also Graells tamarin) are named after him and the butterfly genus Graellsia with the only species Isabella spinner , which he discovered during a migration in the Sierra de Gredos , was first described in 1849 and named after the Spanish Queen Isabella II. named.

He became a senator and was in command of the Royal Order of Charles III, was a member of the Legion of Honor and President of the Royal Council for Agriculture, Industry and Commerce. His maternal uncle was the historian Florencio Janer .

In 1833 he became a corresponding member of the French Entomological Society. In 1858 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

The Graellsia Boiss plant genus is named after him . from the cruciferous family (Brassicaceae).
