Earl of Aboyne

Earl of Aboyne is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

The Earls family seat is Aboyne Castle in Aberdeenshire .

Award and history of the title

The title was bestowed on September 10, 1660 by King Charles II to the royalist Lord Charles Gordon , a younger son of George Gordon, 2nd Marquess of Huntly . Along with the earliest dignity , he was awarded the subordinate title of Lord Gordon of Strathavon and Glenlivet .

His great-great-grandson, the 5th Earl, was also awarded the title Baron Meldrum , of Morven in the County of Aberdeen on August 11, 1815 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom . He also inherited the title 9th Marquess of Huntly in 1836 when the descendants of the older brothers of the 1st Earl were extinguished . The Earldom of Aboyne has since been a subordinate title of the respective Marquess of Huntly and the eldest son of the respective Marquess has been using the courtesy title Earl of Aboyne as the title heir ( heir apparent ) .
