Awards and subordinate and other titles

The title of Earl of Strathmore was bestowed by Letters Patent on July 10, 1606 in the Peerage of Scotland to Patrick Lyon, 9th Lord Glamis , along with the subordinate title of Lord Lyon and Glamis . The titles could only be inherited in the direct male line. He had inherited the subordinate title of Lord Glamis from his father as early as 1578 , which was given to his direct ancestor Sir John Lyon of Glamis on June 28, 1445 in the Peerage of Scotland .

His grandson, the 3rd Earl of Strathmore, received a supplementary deed on May 30, 1672, which expanded the succession regulation of the Earl title to the extent that, in the absence of direct male descendants, it was also passed on to any person personally designated by the respective Earl or in the absence of such Disposal should pass to his other heirs. On July 1, 1677, he received another supplementary document that changed his title to 3rd Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne with the subordinate titles Viscounts Lyon and Lords Glamis, Tannadyce, Sidlaw, and Strathdichtie .

His great-great-grandson, the 10th Earl, was awarded the title Baron Bowes , of Streatlam Castle in the County of Durham and of Lunedale in the County of York on July 18, 1815 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom , making this one Seat in the British House of Lords . However, this title expired on his childless death on July 3, 1820. The Earldom and the other titles fell to his brother, as the 11th Earl.

For his son, the 13th Earl, the title Baron Bowes , of Streatlam Castle in the County of Durham and of Lunedale in the County of York, was newly created on July 1, 1887 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom and has been a since then further subordinate title of the respective earl.

His son, the 14th Earl , was the father of Queen Elizabeth, the queen mother and grandfather of the current Queen Elizabeth II. After his son-in-law's coronation as King George VI. On June 1, 1937, he was given the title of Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne in the second award, this time in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. He and his successors have since held two earl titles.

The eldest son of the respective earl carries the courtesy title Lord Glamis as heir Apparent . The senior title Viscount Lyon is not used as a courtesy title to avoid confusion with the Lord Lyon King of Arms .
