Claude Bowes-Lyon, 13th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne (born July 21, 1824 in Redbourn, Hertfordshire , † February 16, 1904 in Bordighera , Italy) was a British nobleman and politician.

Life

He was the younger son of Thomas George Lyon-Bowes, Lord Glamis (1801-1834), and his wife Charlotte Grimstead (around 1798-1881). His paternal grandfather was Thomas Lyon-Bowes, 11th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne (1773-1846). At birth he still had the family name Lyon-Bowes , later he changed it to Bowes-Lyon .

He was at Winchester College educated and studied at Christ Church College of Oxford University . When his grandfather died in 1846, his father had already died, so that his older brother Thomas inherited the title of earl. Claude was then awarded on February 8, 1847 by Royal Warrant the protocol rank of younger son of an earl .

He served in the 2nd Life Guards since 1848 at the latest and rose to the rank of lieutenant in 1852 .

When his brother died childless in 1865, Claude inherited his Peerage of Scotland nobility title as 13th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne .

At times he had the office of a magistrate ( justice of the peace ) for Sussex and the deputy lieutenant of Dundee held. From 1874 to 1904 he was Lord Lieutenant of Forfarshire . From 1870 to 1897 he was a Scottish Representative Peer member of the British House of Lords .

On July 1, 1887, he was awarded the title Baron Bowes , of Streatlam Castle in the County of Durham and of Lunedale in the County of York in the Peerage of the United Kingdom . In contrast to his Scottish titles, this entitled him to an hereditary seat in the British House of Lords.

He died on February 16, 1904 at the age of 79 in Bordighera, Italy, and was buried on February 24, 1904. His eldest son Claude inherited his title of nobility.

Marriage and offspring

On September 28, 1853, he married Frances Dora Smith (1833-1922). He had eleven children with her:
