Baron Bowes was a hereditary British title of nobility bestowed once in the Peerage of Ireland and twice in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .
Awards
For the first time the title Baron Bowes , of Clonlyon in the County of Meath , was created on August 15, 1758 in the Peerage of Ireland for the Lord Chancellor of Ireland John Bowes . The title expired when he died unmarried and childless on July 22, 1767.
The second bestowal was on August 7, 1815, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, the title of Baron Bowes , of Streatlam Castle in the County of Durham and of Lunedale in the County of York , to John Bowes, 10th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne . This already held the title Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne belonging to the Peerage of Scotland , along with subordinate titles. The barony expired on his death on July 3, 1820, because his only son, John Bowes († 1885), had been born before his parents got married and was therefore considered illegitimate. The earldom fell to his brother as the 11th Earl.
For the younger son of the latter Earl, Claude Bowes-Lyon, 13th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne , the title Baron Bowes , of Streatlam Castle in the County of Durham , was awarded in the third bestowal on July 1, 1887 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom and of Lunedale in the County of York, recreated. The Barony of Bowes has since been a subordinate title of the respective Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne. Today's title holder has been Simon Bowes-Lyon, 19th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne as 7th Baron Bowes since 2016 .
