Glamis [ ɡlɑːmz ] ( Gaelic : Glamais ) is a village in the Scottish Council Area Angus , which corresponds to the traditional Scottish county Forfarshire. It is located about 35 km northeast of Perth and about 17 km north of Dundee . The closest town is Forfar . In 1991 Glamis had 259 inhabitants, which was a slight increase compared to the value of 205 in 1961.

history

The village is located on a stream called Glamis Burn and was formerly the main town of the Parish of the same name and the location of the Parish Church, built in 1792 with 850 seats. In front of the rectory is the symbol stone of Glamis Manse , which commemorates the murder of the Scottish King Malcolm II in Glamis in 1034. Several obelisks and menhirs can be found in the vicinity of the village .

A few hundred meters north of Glamis is Glamis Castle , which probably dates back to a hunting lodge from the early 11th century, where Malcolm II probably found his death. The building has been expanded and expanded several times over the centuries. It was the ancestral home of the family of the British Queen Mother , who gave birth to their daughter Princess Margaret there . Glamis went down in literature as the location of Glamis Castle. So is Macbeth , the protagonist of Shakespeare's eponymous tragedy, Thane von Glamis and Cawdor . However, the relationship of the Scottish King Macbeth to Glamis Castle is only fictional and does not correspond to historical events.

traffic

Glamis is located directly on the A94 , which connects Perth with Forfar, around ten kilometers to the east. The A928 , which leads to Kirriemuir from Dundee, also runs through Glamis. With the airports of Dundee and Perth there are two commercial airports within 30 km. Glamis was once connected to the rail network via its own station, but the route has since been abandoned.
