Andrew Gray, 2nd Lord Gray

Andrew Gray, 2nd Lord Gray (* around 1445, † February 1514 ) was a Scottish nobleman .

Life

He was the son of Sir Patrick Gray, Master of Gray († 1463/64) from his second marriage to Annabella Forbes, daughter of Alexander Forbes, 1st Lord Forbes . On the death of his grandfather Andrew Gray, 1st Lord Gray , he inherited his title of nobility as 2nd Lord Gray and his possessions including the family seat of Fowlis Castle in Angus at the end of 1469 .

Gray participated in 1488 in the rebellion of Crown Prince Jacob (IV.) Against his father King Jacob III. , which culminated on June 11th in the Battle of Sauchieburn, in which Jacob III. was killed. The new King James IV elevated Gray to hereditary sheriff of Forfar in the same year and soon afterwards appointed him to the Privy Council . In 1489 he also held the office of Justiciary General North of Forth and in 1506 the office of Justiciary General South of Forth .

In 1490 the king also transferred Broughty Castle to him , which he expanded considerably in 1495.

He was married four times. His first marriage was in March 1464, Janet Keith, only daughter of Sir Robert Keith, Marischal of Scotland († 1446). With her he had a son and two daughters:

In his second marriage, at the latest in 1483, he married Lady Elizabeth Stewart, daughter of John Stewart, 1st Earl of Atholl . With her he had four sons and four daughters:

In his third marriage after 1497 he married Margaret Houston, widow of Robert Lyle, 2nd Lord Lyle , and after 1501 in fourth marriage Lady Elizabeth Hay, widow of George Gordon, 2nd Earl of Huntly , daughter of William Hay, 1st Earl of Erroll . These two marriages remained childless.

When he died in February 1514, his eldest son from his first marriage, Patrick , inherited him as 3rd Lord Gray.
