Award and subordinate titles

The title was created on June 12, 1452 for Sir William Hay, 2nd Lord Hay . Together with the Earldom he was given the title of Lord Slains . Like many older Scottish titles, the titles can pass to the eldest daughter if there are no sons entitled to inherit.

As early as 1437 he had inherited from his grandfather, Sir William Hay of Erroll, the title of Lord Hay, which was bestowed on him in March 1430 in the Peerage of Scotland . The Earl's Heir Apparent has had the courtesy title of Lord Hay since 1452 .

In 1666 the 11th Earl was given the right by the Crown to determine a title heir himself if there is no direct descendant. He made use of this in 1674 when he designated his cousin and his descendants as title heirs.

The 24th Earl inherited on February 27, 1985 from his father the title of 12th Moncreiffe Baronet , of Moncreiffe in Perthshire, which had been awarded on November 30, 1685 in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia.

Another title

The 18th Earl married Elizabeth FitzClarence , an illegitimate daughter of King William IV , in 1820. In order to get him a seat in the House of Lords , which was not associated with Scottish dignity, Hay was given the title of Baron Kilmarnock in 1831 . This title, which belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom , can only be awarded in the male line. After the death of the 22nd Earl, who had a daughter but no son, he fell to his younger brother.
