Merlin Hay, 24th Earl of Erroll
Merlin Sereld Victor Gilbert Hay, 24th Earl of Erroll (born April 20, 1948 in Edinburgh ) is a non-party member (so-called crossbencher ) of the British House of Lords , Chief of Clan Hay and hereditary Lord High Constable of Scotland .
life and career
His parents are Sir Iain Moncreiffe of that Ilk , 11th Baronet and Diana Hay, 23rd Countess of Erroll . He attended Eton College and Trinity College in Cambridge . In 1956 he served as the page of Sir Thomas Innes of Learney , who was then Lord Lyon King of Arms . He inherited his mother's titles in 1978, and finally his father's in 1985.
Since 1974 he has held the rank of lieutenant in the Atholl Highlanders and is also a member of the Royal Company of Archers . He served in the Territorial Army from 1975 to 1990, and from 1992 to 1997 as regiment chief of the Royal Military Police . In addition to his military career, he worked as a software developer, marketing and IT consultant.
He has been a member of the House of Lords since 1978 and has been a hereditary peer since the House of Lords Act 1999 and continues to have a seat. His main fields of work in the House of Lords include internet security and information and communication technology . As spokesman for the bipartisan Science and Technology Select Committee, just a few weeks before one of the largest data protection scandals in Great Britain, he presented proposals for improving Internet security to the British government. In addition to his work as a member of parliament, Merlin Hay is also involved in various organizations in the field of ICT security: He is President of ERADAR, responsible for the "E-business Network" area and a board member of the Information Society Alliance (EURIM). He is the chairman of the Local Authority Smartcards Standard e-Organization .
In addition to his political activities, he is an honorary citizen of the City of London and a member of the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers , of which he was Prime Warden from 2000 to 2001. He is also a member of the Hereditary Peerage Association founded in 2001 .

Merlin Hay married Isabelle Jacqueline Laline Astell Hohler in 1982 and together they have two sons and two daughters, all of whom were born in Basingstoke .
