Baron Kilmarnock , of Kilmarnock in the County of Ayr , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

The respective baron is the hereditary chief of Clan Boyd .

Award

The title was created in 1831 for William George Hay, 18th Earl of Erroll . Whose titles all belonged to the Peerage of Scotland and were therefore not associated with an automatic seat in the House of Lords . Hay held various offices at the royal court. The additional barony gave him a seat in the House of Lords.

Other titles

The barony remained a subordinate title of the respective Earl of Erroll until 1941 . The 22nd earl had no son, but he did have a daughter. Since the earliest dignity , like many older Scottish titles, could also be inherited in the female line, it fell to the daughter, while the barony of Kilmarnock passed to the younger brother Gilbert Hay as the 6th baron, who also took the surname Boyd .
