Earl of Rothes is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was created around 1457 for George Leslie, 1st Lord Leslie . The exact date of the award is unknown, it is documented that he already held the title on March 20, 1458. He had previously been awarded the title of Lord Leslie in 1445 . Both titles belong to the Peerage of Scotland.

Other titles

The 7th Earl was elevated to Duke of Rothes on May 29, 1680 . Together with the Dukedom he was awarded the subordinate titles of Marquess of Ballinbriech , Earl of Leslie , Viscount of Lugtoun and Lord Auchmotie and Caskieberry . These titles also belonged to the Peerage of Scotland and expired on his death on July 27, 1681.
