Branches of the first three cervical nerves

The nervus occipitalis tertius ( Latin : third occipital nerve ) is a sensitive peripheral nerve of the neck. It arises from the posterior (dorsal) branch of the third spinal nerve (C3). Its supply area is quite small and adjoins that of the greater occipital nerve near the median plane in a caudal direction (rump) . The nervus occipitalis tertius also forms fiber connections with the nervus occipitalis major.

The tertiary occipital nerve can be involved in occipital neuralgia .
