from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Euphemia Stewart, 2nd Countess of Strathearn and Caithness (* before 1375 - † October 15, 1434 ), was a Scottish noblewoman .

Life

Her father was David , the first son of King Robert II from his second marriage to Euphemia de Ross ; her mother was a daughter of Sir Alexander Lindsay of Glenesk and sister of David Lindsay, 1st Earl of Crawford .

As with many women of this time, the dates of life can only be determined from the deeds of the men around them: with the death of her father, she also took over his title as Countess Palatine of Stratherne and Caithness . Before July 1402 she renounced the title Earl of Caithness in favor of her uncle Walter, Earl of Atholl , and from then on called herself Countess Palatine of Stratherne .

Her first marriage to Patrick Graham ( de iure uxoris Earl of Strathearn ) before December 1406 had three children; the daughters Elisabeth and Euphemia (married in first marriage to Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Douglas and in second marriage to James Hamilton, 1st Lord Hamilton ), and their son Malise , title holder and later Earl of Menteith . After the death of her husband on August 10, 1413, she married Patrick Dunbar in 1415; with him she had sons Patrick and George.
