James Hamilton, 1st Lord Hamilton (* around 1415 - 6 November 1479 ) was a Scottish nobleman .

Life

He was a son of Sir James Hamilton , 5th Laird of Cadzow and his wife Janet Livingston.

He had already been beaten to the Knight Bachelor when he was admitted to the Scottish Privy Council in 1440 . Shortly after he inherited his father as the 6th Laird of Cadzow, he transferred his possessions in Raploch to his cousin James Hamilton in 1441 . In 1445 King James II made him a peer as Lord Hamilton .

Relatively and through marriage to the Douglas family, he followed them in their rebellion against the Scottish Crown in 1445, but switched to the king's side in 1454 and was able to secure significant land gain from the Douglas property confiscated.

In 1455 he held the office of sheriff of Lanarkshire and was under King James III. between 1461 and 1472 entrusted several diplomatic missions to England .

Marriages and offspring

In his first marriage he married Lady Euphemia Graham († 1468), widow of Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Douglas († 1439), daughter of Patrick Graham and Euphemia Stewart, 2nd Countess of Strathearn and Caithness . With this he had a daughter:

In his second marriage in 1474 he married Princess Mary († 1488), daughter of King Jacob II and widow of Thomas Boyd of Kilmarnock. As a trousseau , Mary brought the Isle of Arran with her into the marriage, which became the subject of an eternal dispute between his family and the Douglas. Through the connection with the king's daughter, James' descendants later derived claims to the throne from this marriage. From his marriage to Mary, James had the following children:

He also had three illegitimate children with a Janet Calderwood, to whom he transferred his possessions in Machanmuir, Broomhill and Silvertonhill in 1474 and who were recognized as legitimate children by King James IV in 1513 :
