James Hamilton of Cadzow
Sir James Hamilton (* before 1397, † before May 1441) was a Scottish knight and 5th Laird of Cadzow in Lanarkshire .
He was a son of Sir John Hamilton , 4th Laird of Cadzow, and his wife Janet Douglas, brother of James Douglas, 1st Lord Dalkeith , of the Douglas family . It is documented for the first time in 1397 when his father transferred the Kinneil House estate and the associated lands to him. When his father died around 1402, he inherited the rest of his property.
He married Janet Livingston (* around 1395), daughter of Sir Alexander Livingston of Callendar († 1451), with whom he had seven children:

In 1424 he was brought to England as a hostage for paying the ransom for the release of King James I of Scotland from English captivity. He was held at Fotheringhay Castle and later at Dover Castle . He was able to return to Scotland in 1426 and was knighted there in 1430 at the latest.
The date of his death is not known, in May 1441 it is documented that he had already died. His eldest son, James, inherited him as Laird von Cadzow and was raised to Lord Hamilton in 1445 . His widow married Sir Robert Bruce of Airth for the second time after his death.
