Lord Hamilton was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland . The title has been suspended since 1651.

Award

The title was created for Sir James Hamilton on June 28, 1445 . He was laird of the Barony of Cadzow in Lanarkshire , which his ancestor Sir Walter Fitz Gilbert had acquired around 1315 and for which the name Hamilton prevailed over time . His son, the 2nd Lord , was made Earl of Arran on August 11, 1503 .

His grandson, the 3rd Earl , was stripped of his title in 1581 for high treason and his lands were confiscated by the Crown. 1585 achieved the return of the lands and the restoration of the titles. His nephew, the 4th Earl , had inherited the title of Marquess of Hamilton in 1604 and was also promoted to Earl of Cambridge in 1619 . His son, the 3rd Marquess , was also elevated to Duke of Hamilton in 1643 . On the death of his brother, the 2nd Duke , the Marquessate Hamilton and the Earldom Cambridge went out, the Earldom Arran and the Lordship Hamilton fell into a state of rest, and the Dukedom Hamilton fell to his niece Anne Hamilton .
